11 killed, several wounded in latest Iraq violence

BAGHDAD: A spate of bombings and shootings Sunday across Iraq claimed the lives of 11 people, including an Iraqi police general, security officials said.

Three Iraqis died and eight were wounded in two separate bombings within minutes of each other near Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone enclave, home to the US embassy and the Iraqi government.

A car bomb exploded at 1330 GMT, targeting a government convoy not far from the Green Zone, a police officer said on condition of anonymity. Minutes later, a suicide bomber blew himself up as he was approaching a police comando convoy and wounded four other Iraqis on the Al-Jumhuriyah bridge, which serves as the main route to the Green Zone, a defense ministry official said. Earlier in the day, Gen Khatam Khalaf al-Obeidi, the deputy police chief of the oil rich city of Kirkuk, was killed along with two of his bodyguards in a roadside bombing, police said.

Elsewhere, gunmen attacked a three truck convoy on its way to a US military base, killing one driver and wounding another just north of Baghdad in the town of Dujail, an interior ministry official said.

In the capital, assailants shot dead a policeman in the rebel-dominated neighborhood of al-Jihad, the official said, while a police commando was gunned down in the al-Bayae district and an Iraqi soldier was killed in the Al-Hurriyah neighborhood.

Iraq group says it has killed two officers: A militant group said on Sunday it had killed two Iraqi brothers who are officers in the National Guard and posted a video showing the captives on the Internet.

The video showed them sitting blindfolded on the floor as masked insurgents stood by with assault rifles. One of the captives said he and his brother were officers in the Iraqi National Guard and gave a confession that was mostly inaudible.

The video did not show the actual killing. reuters
