The Bush Domino Effect

The Bush Domino Effect is something that occurred BECAUSE of the Iraq invasion and the instability it cased in Iraq and the region.

America entered the Vietnam war to stop 'communism' from spreading in south east Asia. The thinking was that as each country fell the spread of Communism would spread and in fact accelerate. This was not the case.

In Iraq Bush decided to invade to spread Democracy. Forget the issues of WMD's, 9/11, working with Al qaida and regime change. All proved to be red herrings for Bush's 'real' goal.

Apparently the military WAS doing their job and doing it well. The Mission of over throwing Saddam and turning Iraq back over to the Iraqis people was succeeding UNTIL May of 2003. This was when the White House began the mission drift.

There were two plans for Iraq, militarily. One was for the overthrow of Iraq, and the other was for the occupation of Iraq.

For the overthrow of Saddam it was generally agreed this could be done with 100,000 to 150,000 troops. The Military would IMMEDIATELY turn power over to the Iraq military and police and allow the Iraqis people to begin governing themselves. The crucial part was employing the Military and police to maintain control and security.

the second plan was for the continued occupation of Iraq. The consensus was for 500,000 troops to do this. However no one thought that occupying Iraq was a good idea.

So the initial plan was simply to overthrow Saddam and then leave a stabilized Iraq in Iraqis hands immediately. The time table for this was months, not years.

Bush decided to change the plan to one of occupation. He did this without two key components. The Iraqis army and police and the 500,000 troops.

The result is not only the lost of the victory of the military, but also the potential of the lost of the entire region to pro Iranian Shia control. A domino effect instigated by Bush and his unprovoked war of aggression in Iraq.

Bush in his arrogance will have personally been responsible for making the world a more dangerous place for Americans and America.

Bin Laden was a singular terror threat. He saw his greatest moment with 9/11 and was a hunted man who should have been dead in 2002 the latest.

Bush in his hubris has created bin laden's wet dream. A region with oil that is now very strongly anti-American with the potential of having nukes through Iran.

Iraq was the threat that never existed, and Iran is becoming the reality of the threat war that the American people no longer have the will to fight because then no longer trust this administration.

The result will be that the entire region will begin falling to the Shia/Iranian NOT the Sunni/Al qaida threat that never was.

This is the Bush Domino Effect.
This is the Bush Legacy.

I hope this isn't a downer for the 25 year old partying Bush twins.

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

A self governing Iraq

The road to peace in Iraq is equal representation for all in the Government.

Iraq will be partitioned into three separate but equal states.

Turk, Shia, Sunni.

This is occurring anyway because of the violence. Iraqis are retreating back home to tribal borders or exodus from Iraq entirely.

The three Iraq states will elect one third of the Iraq Congress representatives, each.

The Presidency will be elected by the Congress, not the people.

To get to this point security must first be brought to Iraq.

This will be done by re-instating the draft in the US. It is a simple necessity.

Increase troop strength immediately by 20,000.

Redeploy troops to the Borders of Iran and Syria to SECURE the borders after first making it clear this is not a move prior to invasion.

Encourage the neighboring Middle East countries it is in THEIR best interests for a stable self governing country.

Get troops from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, where ever but they should be the OPEC countries for OBVIOUS reasons. An unstable Iraq threatens the world oil supply.

Then use a mix group to pacify and secure Iraq.

The US Marines go in first to pacify the area, then a mixed group of 1/3 Iraqis, 1/3 OPEC, 1/3 US-coalition maintain security and peace. As the Iraqis step up, the OPEC, US-Coalition steps down.

Repeat

Repeat

Repeat.

This process should take two years to complete.

This is RESPONSIBLE DISENGAGEMENT!

Feed back?

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Re: 72 hours of issue avoiding mud slinging name calling for a few points?!!!

72 hours of issue avoiding mud slinging name calling for a few points?

Carl Rove is pulling out every dirty trick in the book, from name calling, race baiting, phone slamming and out right lying.

All of this and STILL the Democrats will gain control of one if not two of the houses of Congress.

Republicans are desperate. They are scared and for good reason. America doesn't buy their lying game anymore.

You can't keep blaming Clinton and the Democrats when they haven't been in power for years.

You can't keep saying no one knew about 9/11, the Anthrax attacks, Iraq, Bin Laden, Katrina, Schiavo, Abu Gharib, torture, Plame, warrantless wire taps and the open civil war occurring.

No WMD's, No Bin Laden, No help for 3 days for Katrina victims, no real tax cuts to those making under $100,000, not enough troops, not enough armor, no guards for the ammo depots, no exit plan in Iraq, no plan for holding the VICTORY in IRAQ, no ethics, no morality.

America has had enough of the Bush Republicans and their irresponsible Governance!

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Would you pay $158 so your kids do not owe $10000? Republicans won't!

So once again a recap, you earn less than $100,000 (88% of the US)
you got a tax cut of $158.61. The 15 million jobs Bush promised
would happen because of the tax cuts, are not occurring. The GDP
has slowed to 1.6%. There is serious talk of a recession. The tax cuts
have caused record debt and record deficits. Your Children now owe
$10,326.09 each to pay back the debt, this number will only grow.
Those making over $100,000 received a tax cut of $4,754.57.
Republicans say that Democrats will raise your taxes.

What American is not willing to pay $158.61, so their Children will
not have to pay $10,326.09? I will tell you. Republicans are not willing.

Stop selling out your children's future, vote Democrat.

If you earned less than $100,000 your share of the tax cut was $158.61 on Average.

If you earned more than $100,000, your share of the tax cut was $4,754.57 on Average.

So if you earn over $100,000 a year, you should vote republican.

If you are earning less than $100,000 a year and vote Republican, you should ask yourself WHY? For $158.61? The increase in gas wiped that out in a week.

If you do not believe me, do the math yourself. Here are my calculations...

I am going to break this down for everyone based on the ADMINISTRATIONS numbers....

In 2003 the Administration said there were 92 million tax payers who on 'average' would receive $1083 each. This does not mean each of the 92 million GOT $1083, it just meant that if you took the entire tax cut and divided it by the number of tax payers it comes to $1083.

The reality is this.

The total tax cut in 2003 was $99,636,000,000.

$87,978,588,000 goes to people making over $100,000 a year.

If you make over $100,000 a year, the 'average' tax cut you received was $4,754.57

18,504,000 received this on average.

The rest of America, the lower middle class and the working poor received what was left. That is $11,657,412,000 to be divided between the remaining 73,496,000 Tax payers.

So if you made less than $100,000 you received on Average a tax cut of $158.61.

So you tell me, who HONESTLY benefited from the Bush Tax cuts?

According to theTax Policy Institute:
45.8% of the benefits from a reduction in capital gains and dividends went to people with incomes over $1 million.  There were 284,000 taxpayers in this income group.  This is .19% of all taxpayers.

An additional 10.8% of the benefits went to people with incomes between $500,000 and $1 million.  There were 593,000 taxpayers in this income group.  This is .40% of all taxpayers.

17.4% of the benefits went to people with incomes between $200,000 and $500,000. There were 3,588,000 taxpayers in this income group. This is 2.46% of all taxpayers.

14.3% of the benefits went to people with incomes of $100,000 to $200,000.  There were 14,039,000 taxpayers in this income group.
This is 9.66% of all taxpayers.
In other words --
88.3% of the total benefits from Bush tax cuts went to people with incomes over $100,000.  In addition, the total number of taxpayers who got a vast majority of the benefits represent only 12.71% of all taxpayers.

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

For a few Silver Coins in tax cuts, Bush Republicans are the new Judas's

For a few Silver Coins in tax cuts, Bush Republicans are the new 21st Century Judas's

Anyone who voted for Bush needs to explain to their children why they endangered their children's future security, standard of living, and American Pre-eminence for a few silver coins, like Judas betrayed Christ; in the form of tax cuts!

A classic example of the way the Republican's spin the facts into lies!

This is a classic example of the way the Republican's spin the facts so they actually become LIES!

Bush wants to keep America afraid of it's own shadow!

Iran and Venezuela REALLY are not threats to this country. They are only giving the people of their countries something to keep their minds off the REAL problems that their countries face. (hint hint)

The REAL threat is Al qaida. They have no populations to placate, nor military to keep at bay. Al qaida is not worried about staying in power, or maintaining control of a country. These despots ARE!

Al qaida only has  but one goal, to destroy Western civilization. This is why they ARE THE ONLY REAL THREAT to the US!

Iran ENJOYS the privileges of Western Civilization, so does Venezuela! Try to UNDERSTAND the REALITIES of the International arena. These are just old toothless junk yard dogs. Invading or threatening to invade these countries plays into the hands of our REAL enemies! It gives credence to the manifestos they preach about America being the great evil to Islam!

Bush needs to stop worrying about his political survival, and the Republicans need to stop trying to rally the base to stay in power. In doing this they are missing the truly important issue, the protection of this country against the real enemy. Al qaida.

Al qaida took advantage of the Iraq debacle and now have a killing field for Americans, a training ground for al qaida, and a rich recruiting area for terrorists! Iraq gave rebirth to Al qaida!

It is time for hard unpopular decisions. One that Bush can now make since he now has nothing left to lose. Bring back the draft, fix the mess in Iraq we should never have created. Focus of the real terrorists, Al qaida. Let Israel deal with Iran, they will let us Know when Iran is a REAL threat. They will bomb Iran!

America has taken on the personae of a third world dictatorship. Everyone is against us, and we need to attack before we are attacked. This is the blueprint for every failed administration that has tried to obscure failed domestic policies with aggressive antagonistic Foreign policies.

Yes al qaida attacked the US. Some how we survived the first attack in 1993 and the Anthrax attacks. Life went on. It goes on in other countries that suffered terror attacks. Only in America has it become a wall of worry a President uses to hold on to power. Enough is enough. I am not going to live my life afraid of my own shadow, nor do I want a leader who tries to keep me in constant fear to maintain control.

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Why Bush is losing the 'War on Terror' in Iraq. IMHO

I am against not only the war in Iraq but also how Bush and Co. tried to fight it on the cheap!

Just like Abu Gharib, amateurs were used for roles that should have been provided by professionals Worst, like Abu Gharib these Idiots Documented their atrocities, but these idiots went one step further and POSTED the video THEMSELVES to the World Wide Web!

You wonder why we are loosing the hearts and minds of Iraqis? This is why! Abu Gharib, The rape and murder of the 14 year old girl and her family, the killing of the negotiator who rescued the Italian News reporter, and now this video. This is only the tip of the iceberg. 100 bodies a day with drill holes and other signs of torture are other signs things are going very badly.

Bush keeps saying stay the course, I think not! So far all I have seen is an incomplete handling of the post Iraq war and the lost of military victory that has become a Katrina style catastrophe!

my opinion of Bush is this.....

Bush's plan for victory is another plan for failure

Iraq was the Wrong War at the Wrong Time for the Wrong Reasons.

Simply put, the preemptive war of choice was the worst thing America could have done in it's war on terrorism. For Al qaida the Iraq war turned defeat in Afghanistan into a world wide rallying cry.

Iraq was no threat to the US.
Iraq had no WMD's
Iraq was not involved in 9/11.
Iraq had no supporting role with Al qaida.
Iraq was not an immediate threat to the US.
Iraq was not an imminent threat to the US.
Iraq might have been a threat in the distant future, MAYBE!

Bush's plan for victory, like his first plan for invasion, is not based on reality. The reality is Iraq is becoming a war of desperation with ever decreasing chances for a good fairy tale ending. Iraq will become everything Bush warned the world Iraq would become if we did not invade. In fact because of the invasion Iraq will become everything Bush predicted and worst.

Iraq's fate could have been different. It could have been everything Bush predicted. For this to have happened, Bush would have had to be truthful and open. One thing it is obvious the Administration is incapable of being.

From the beginning Iraq was doomed to failure.

The Bush administration 'filtered' the Intelligence and the N.I.E. on the Intelligence. The administration used extreme bad judgement in it's inclusion of questionable and challenged Intelligence in it's justification for war. Intelligence that all proved to be WRONG.

The republicans say the Democrats were at fault also. Why? Apparently it is the Democrats fault for believing Bush at his word during war time. You heard me. The Republicans are blaming the Democrats for taking Bush at his word and not double checking the facts. This is like blaming a woman for being raped because she is pretty. This is how ever the Administrations reasoning for all the many mistakes that have occurred.

The Bush Administration planned for a successful invasion of Iraq. 'Mission Accomplish!' Who didn't know this was going to happen. The real test was what happened AFTER the invasion, when the real battle for the hearts and minds of the Iraqis were at stake. This is where the hubris and incompetence of this Bush Administration is very apparent.

So let me 'Bring It On!'

The Intelligence was wrong, based on lies.
There were no WMD's
There wasn't enough troops.
The Ammo and weapon depots were not secured.
The IAEA sites were not secured.
No security was provided after the Iraq military and police were disbanded.
Rioting, looting, crime and chaos was allowed unhindered.
Crime, chaos and murder have gone unchecked.
Indiscriminate torture of the indigent population has occurred.
The claim that it is better to fight Al qaida in Iraq rather than in the US or in Afghanistan were Al qaida was.
The Downing Memos.
Allowing roaming killing squads to exist.
Using Chemical and anti personnel weapons in civilian populated areas.

These are the most egregious mistakes that could have been prevented if Bush had simply LISTENED to criticism.

The solution for Iraq is not in Iraq. The solution for Iraq begins in the White House. For the Iraq war would never have been if not for the White House. Until Bush is willing to admit the fundamental mistakes of it's Iraq war strategy, there will be no positive outcome in Iraq.

Bush's Presidency is a failure. It is a far reaching failure for not just Bush and his supporters. This failure reverberates through out America, the Middle East and the World Bush's failure has made the world a MUCH more dangerous place.

This is a failure that cannot be allowed to happen. For this reason Iraq MUST BE A WORLD WIDE ISSUE Unfortunately the world is getting out in 2006. We will be left with this. The only way to turn it around is to show the world America acknowledges this Administration's Iraq Agenda was wrong. America has taken those first tentative steps. Next Congress and America must take the lead on 'fixing' Iraq.

America cannot survive anymore Bush plans for victory.

What we need to do to turn this around is bring back the draft and increase troop strength to 500,000!

Bush Apologists, you haven't got the slightest f**king clue what I believe about the danger of terrorism because, as with all conservatives, you're too terrified in your frightened little shell of desperate flailing to do anything but construct straw men based on delusional fantasies regarding what you wish liberals were like, because it's the only way you can rationalize the childish world view held by the right. Wake up. Look at what happens when you Right-wingers bring your adolescent punch lines into the world as foreign and domestic policy. (And btw, there was a surplus when Clinton left office, which Bush promptly wasted. Sorry to once again intrude on the Right-wing fantasy.) You know what I would have done if I invaded Iraq? I would have done what Ike did when planning D-Day, and expected the worst, rather than the punk-bitch attitude of Dick "five deferments" Cheney and the cakewalk brigade. They deserve the firing squad for what they've done to our military -- but instead, they'll just get medals and promotions, just like the Iranian spy Ahmed Chalabi that the traitorous scumbags fed their schoolboy fantasies with, who is being given yet another high level position in the puppet Iraqi government (before it crashes, as it will), where he can steal more millions from American taxpayers instead of being shot in the back of the head and dragged through the streets like Mussolini as he deserves.
I would have built Afghanistan up like a g-d damned Olympic village to be the "model democracy" for the Middle East -- a concept conservatives sh*t all over with their every move, because they haven't got the slightest f**king clue about people or how the world works. All they have is their mutual bullsh*t societies to pump each other up and tell themselves how smart they are, and how everyone else is a traitor. And if I still wanted to invade Iraq, I would have followed the plans that the generals made over the preceding decade, instead of chucking them out the window in favor of senile Dong Rumsfeld's criminal horsesh*t. Then I would have slowly brought 500,000 troops to the region, using a safe and prosperous Afghanistan as a base, and slowly built a looming cloud of death over Saddam and his murderous sons like a towering wall of slag from Mount Vesuvius, before crashing down like the wrath of God over that backwater dictator, crushing him in one fell swoop while also holding the country together -- rather than allowing the "mess" that a**hole Rumsfeld was moron enough to say he planned.
That's how you win a war, not through half-assed talking points and sissy crying about "Oh, the media and liberals are talking bad about us!!! Waaaah!!!" That's how my grandfather helped kill the fascists in Germany in WWII -- an era that today's non-military serving Republican leadership has Oedipal wet dreams of living up to as they send other men off to die in order to make up for being such dickless wonders themselves. At least Papa Bush was a bonified hero pilot in WWII. His son is a jerk-off pretender weirdo with a chip on his shoulder bigger than his idiot monkey brain. Real men don't need to kill other people to prove how "tough" they are. Real men can out-think dumb asses like Saddam Hussein, at least enough to avoid tens of thousands of dead and wounded, which, incidentally, are already in line with the numbers in Vietnam, except for body armor keeping them alive. It's a loser plan implemented by losers who have already lost the war, but are too stupid and prideful to admit it

The facts of the REAL world show that the Republicans are clueless to how to actually run things. Their pragmatic thinking is not applicable to the Real world. They wrongfully believe that through sheer force of will and faith they will get others to do the 'right' thing. Fools. They should simply look in the mirror at their own intractability to issues such as Abortion to understand the REALITIES of the world. If they can not see other sides of an argument how do they expect others to change their views?

They still cling to WMD's. They Still Cling to Schiavo was the correct thing to do. They still give Bush a Pass on 9/11 Katrina and Iraq. They still make excuses about the fact that Bin laden is still alive and free 5 years after attacking the US. They ignore the staggering Debt, Deficit and Trade Deficits. They ignore the weakening dollar. They turn a blind eye to the lowering standard of living MOST Americans are now experiencing. The housing market is in decline. Wealth generation is now negative.

Republicans are causing the decline of the Preeminence of America yet will not look beyond what their twisted interpretation of what the Bible says, then they talk about our enemies holy wars.

Look in the mirror!

You want to support the troops, you need to put a man in the office who has a clue on how to correctly conduct a war. Bush does not.

If the President will not support the troops by conducting the war in a competent manor with proven war strategy or OVER WHELMING military strength and PRESENCE then we should never have invaded in the first place.

The terms Powell Doctrine mean anything to you Bush apologists?

If Bush does not have the balls to reinstate the draft, increase troop strength to 500,000 in Iraq, so we stop playing 'whack a mole' and completely overwhelm the enemy, and THEN give protection AND security to the Iraqis so when insurgents DO TRY TO REINSTATE their presence in a pacified area, the civilian population will feel secure and safe enough to step forward and point out the bad guys without fear of retribution. This is NOT THE CASE NOW. Now the US military can NOT maintain such forces because not enough troops are in place.

So if you are not going to support the troops by increasing troop strength to 500,000 LIKE THE FIRST IRAQ WAR so the military can RECLAIM victory, then get the troops the hell out of IRAQ!

This is the problem you Bush apologists will not admit to.

I will not even bother discussing the reasons for invasion. History already knows those facts, or lack of facts.

The standard republican response shows why the World hates the lazy incompetent Bush Administration. It isn't about facts, but how you want to view the realities of the world. If it doesn't fit in your narrow box of how the world should be, then it isn't reality and is irrelevant.

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Adults and Children, Democrats and Republicans

Adults know that you sacrifice short term for long term returns. Democrats know that means letting the tax cuts sunset so our children will not be saddled with the record US Debt and Deficit.

Children want what they want when they want it. That means that not only do the Republicans want the tax cuts permanent, they want increased tax cuts, that will not only jeopardize our children's future, but their own with Social Security and Medicaid and Medicare insolvent!

This is just one example, but there are MANY.

ONE POISON PILL DESERVES ANOTHER!

ONE POISON PILL DESERVES ANOTHER!

Bush says Congress needs to pass laws dealing with prisoners. He is giving an ultimatum of do it my way or be labeled soft on terror. My suggestion is this...

Fine, let's pass the legislation but why stop there.

Let's also pass ALL the recommendations of the 9/11 commission.

Let's also pass laws for border security and enforcement of immigration laws regarding illegal employment.

Let's also reinstate the draft.

Let's also find Bin laden.

Let's make the issue, NOT about GETTING tough on Terror, but how Bush has not DONE THE JOB of BEING tough on terror!

5 years later and we STILL DO NOT HAVE a secure border, a coherent terror list, secure ports. Bush wants laws for handling terrorist, lets add all the other issues ALSO!

let's see how the Republicans handle being forced to be viewed weak on terrorism if they do NOT include these additions!

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Coming back to Constitutional America

Bush has stopped torturing prisoners.

Has admitted to having illegal prisons.

Is NOW willing to honor the Constitution and American law.

All in time for the elections.

Now we need to hear how this illegal activity has saved US lives.

Like the anonymous tip one year ago about the London terrorist looking to bomb Airplanes. Bush said the illegal wire tap program prevented the attack. A LIE.
The truth is the Brit's asked the US to monitor the suspects after normal intelligence had already gathered the names and had court ordered warrants to monitor the suspects.

Bush is desperately trying to tie Iraq to the global war on terror. He says we need to have victory in Iraq.

I thought we already won that one? 'Mission accomplished. Last throes and a few dead enders. You mean we can lose in Iraq? When did this happen?

I am tired of Bush apologists saying the Anti-Bush crowd is soft on terror

I am tired of Bush apologists saying the Anti-Bush crowd is soft on terror

At least Papa Bush was a bonefied hero pilot in WWII. His son is a jerk-off pretender weirdo with a chip on his shoulder bigger than his idiot monkey brain. Real men don't need to kill other people to prove how "tough" they are. Silence from the Bush apologists to Anti Bush Anti Iraq critism and solutions.

I think Bush apologists do not have a clue about what most of the Anti Bush, anti Iraq war opponents believe. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, Bin Laden or the Taliban. We had no business invading Iraq, Bush was wrong on all fronts of the Iraq war.

The problem is that now we are in Iraq and have broken it, it is time to fix it. I am not preaching cut and run, I am preaching if we are going to fight this then fight it the correct way and not on the cheap.

Bring back the draft. If the war on terror is going to be a long war as the Bush Administration keeps saying then we need more troops to fight it and the volenteer military isn't meeting it's recruiting goals.

Put in the troops that the Generals wanted to begin with. 500,000 in Iraq and at least 200,000 in Afghanistan. We have to first wipe out the insurgency in an area, then remain in force to SECURE THE AREA so that the Iraqis feel safe enough to tell when insurgents are once again trying to gain a foot hold. We do not have enough troops top do this.

In the areas where the fighting does not exist begin to stand down the troop levels. Stand up the Iraqis troops there.

If Bush does not have the Balls to do this, then get our troops the hell out of there!

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Bush Republicans and Pro Iraq War Republicans, why aren't you enlisting?

I just posted 3 articles all basicly telling the same story, no one is willing to join the military to fight Bush's war of unprovoked Aggression in Iraq.

I harken back to World War ll, when men who were refused induction into the military often committed suicide from shame. World War ll was a war against an enemy that had attacked American and had killed fewer people than 9/11. The entire country geared up for war. People sacrificed, bought war bonds, worked in military factories, and did everything possible to support the military effort.

Today we have men committing suicide rather than fight in Iraq. Today we are MISSING recruiting goals for ALL Branches of the Military to supply troops for the war in Iraq.

Being that half of the country voted for Bush and supported the war in Iraq, why haven't these MILLIONS of abled body men signed up for the war? Is it because they are only willing to be patriotic, brave and war hawks, as long as it is someone else who will spill their blood and loose their lives? Is it that they are only brave as long as they are safe at home?

Republicans have always been about getting the other guy to do the heavy work, pay the taxes, give their lives and go without so that they Republicans can have a better life!

Enough is enough, let's bring back the draft and see how long this war will last when Republicans have to put up their lives to support their votes.

If people only knew the facts, they would not be fighting for the 'RIGHT' to be screwed over.

Progress Report: Raise the Minimum Wage 6/21/06

AMERICAN PROGRESS ACTION FUND
The Progress Report
by Judd Legum, Faiz Shakir, Nico Pitney
Amanda Terkel and Payson Schwin
www.progressreport.org

ECONOMY
Raise the Minimum Wage

The buying power of the federal minimum wage is currently at its lowest level in 51 yearsEighty-three percent of Americans favor an increase in the minimum wage (nearly half "strongly support" it). Yet, the House conservative leadership hasn't allowed a full floor vote on the minimum wage since the last increase went into effect, in 1997. Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee voted 34 to 28 against attaching a minimum wage amendment to a key spending bill, thus depriving it of a vote on the House floor. But last week, that same committee had agreed to attach the minimum wage amendment to a separate spending measure that funds the departments of Labor and Health and Human Services. Upon passage of last week's amendment, the House leadership announced it would delay bringing the Labor-Health bill to the floor for a vote, and in the meantime, will undoubtedly undertake efforts to strip the minimum wage provision from the bill. The Senate vote today on an amendment offered by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) to raise the federal minimum wage, in three gradual installments over two years, from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour. In the nine years since the federal minimum wage was raised, Congress has voted itself nine pay hikes totaling nearly $35,000 a year, while a full-time minimum wage worker’s annual pay has not budged from $10,712. Just a few days ago, House lawmakers cleared the way for a $3,300 pay raise that will increase their salaries to $168,500. "It’s the height of hypocrisy," said Kennedy.

CONSERVATIVES PLAYING POLITICS: The Senate conservative leadership is rallying opposition to Sen. Kennedy's minimum wage amendment by offering a "poison pill" measure that is meant to deter any debate on the issue. The alternative amendment, sponsored by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), would raise the minimum wage to $6.25, but would couple that raise with unpalatable "reductions in overtime pay and tax cuts for businesses." This isn't the first act of political gamesmanship by the Senate conservatives. Earlier, the Senate leadership, led by Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN), floated the idea of trying to "sink the minimum-wage increase by linking it to an unrelated measure that would make it a crime to transport a minor across state lines to get an abortion." The House conservative leadership is playing its own brand of politics with the minimum wage amendment. They are using "a cruder legislative technique" -- simply refusing to allow the measure to come to the House floor for a vote. Just a week after voting to pass a minimum wage amendment out of the House Appropriations Committee, five committee members -- Reps. Bill Young (R-FL), Jim Walsh (R-NY), Don Sherwood (R-PA), Mike Simpson (R-ID), and Ray LaHood (R-IL) -- switched their votes yesterday and prevented the same amendment from being passed out of the committee on a separate bill. Two other congressmen -- Reps. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) and John Sweeney (R-NY) -- voted for the minimum wage amendment last week but were absent yesterday.
Minority Whip Hoyer, a lead sponsor of the language, said he was confident a wage increase could pass on its own if allowed a floor vote, but Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said he is unlikely to allow it. "There are limits to my willingness to just throw anything out on the floor," he said.

THE JOBS MYTH: In the face of a growing movement behind increasing the minimum wage, the Right is in desperation mode and resorting to peddling regurgitated false claims that a raise hurts small businesses and job growth, increases poverty, and only benefits teenagers. In fact, the evidence as demonstrated below points in the other direction. Efforts to raise the minimum wage since 1997 have failed because business groups have opposed the measure and lobbied against it. "A group of more than 20 business organizations are fighting an increase this year, as part of the 'Coalition for Job Opportunities.'" Their members claim that they would have to cut jobs if the federal minimum wage were raised. In truth, the evidence indicates that small businesses benefit from a higher wage. A report by the Center for American Progress and Policy Matters Ohio found that the "11 states with a minimum wage above the federal minimum of $5.15 per hour had higher rates of small business growth between 1997 and 2003." A recent report from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development said last year's increase in that state's hourly rate produced $175 million in additional payroll and a $3 million boost in tax revenue, without creating job loss. Moreover, the evidence indicates higher wagers will not result in fewer jobs. A 1998 Economic Policy Institute report found that unemployment and poverty rates fell after the 1997 increase in the federal minimum wage, and economists David Card and Alan Krueger noted that increases in the minimum wage in various states in the late 1980s and early 1990s did not result in increased unemployment

THE POVERTY MYTH: Another myth now being peddled by the right is a study by David Neumark of the University of California, Irvine, that estimates poverty rates increase between 3 percent and 4 percent for every 10 percent increase in the minimum wage by depressing employment of low-skill workers. But Neumark's claim belies historical evidence. Since President Bush took office, the number of Americans living in poverty has increased by 5.4 million. As Jared Bernstein of the Economic Policy Institute has argued, "The evidence unequivocally supports the view that increases in the minimum wage, by increasing the earnings of low-income workers without diminishing their employment opportunities, have historically helped to lower poverty rates."

TEENAGER MYTH: Conservatives have argued against the minimum wage by claiming that it only benefits teenagers. In 2005, about a quarter (26 percent) of minimum wage earners were 16 to 19 years old; nearly half (46 percent) were age 25 or older. A minimum wage increase would help people besides teenagers working their first job. Thirty-five percent of minimum wage workers are their family's sole earner, and 65.5 percent of these workers are women. About three-fourths (76 percent) of minimum wage earners work full-time. Sen. Kennedy writes, "A minimum wage worker, who works full-time, 52 weeks a year, makes $5.15 an hour—$10,700 a year. That’s not even enough to keep a single parent with one child above the poverty line!"

STATE INITIATIVES:
House Speaker Dennis Hastert "said last week that he wanted to hold off on debating minimum wage legislation until possibly after the November elections." While Congress dithers and delays, voters in states such as Arizona, California, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Ohio stand ready this November to raise their minimum wages through ballot initiatives. Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia have already enacted minimum wages above the $5.15 federal level. Voters will have the opportunity to send the message to Washington lawmakers that they are out of sync with state legislatures and public opinion.

GOOD NEWS

New Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne "won praise Tuesday from both sides of Capitol Hill as lawmakers welcomed a new management plan for national parks that stresses conservation as the park service's predominant job. The policy reverses a proposal by Kempthorne's predecessor, Gale Norton, that would have shifted the parks' priorities toward recreation."

UNDER THE RADAR

MEDIA -- BUSH NOMINATES NATIONAL REVIEW CONTRIBUTOR TO PUBLIC BROADCASTING BOARD: Yesterday, President Bush announced his intent to nominate television producer and National Review Online (NRO) contributor Warren Bell to the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The CPB is intended to provide a buffer between independent public broadcast networks and vested or partisan interests in government. But instead of being a nonpartisan advocate of public broadcasting, Bell will likely be another advocate of Bush's agenda. Under Bush, the CPB has steadily pushed right-wing priorities, such as trying to put a conservative slant on programming. In his writings for National Review, Bell has been clear about his right-wing views: "I am thoroughly conservative in ways that strike horror into the hearts of my Hollywood colleagues. I support a woman’s right to choose what movie we should see, but not that other one." He has also made it clear that he is unlikely to work in a bipartisan manner, stating in a 2005 column, "I could reach across the aisle and hug [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi, and I would, except this is a new shirt, and that sort of thing leaves a stain.” Congress and the White House need to protect independent and public broadcasting. Write your representatives and demand they save PBS from partisan operatives.

PRIVACY -- CONGRESS TO HOLD HEARINGS ON LAW ENFORCEMENT'S USE OF PERSONAL DATA: "Numerous federal and local law enforcement agencies," the Associated Press reported yesterday, "have bypassed subpoenas and warrants designed to protect civil liberties and gathered Americans' personal telephone records from private-sector data brokers." "These brokers, many of whom advertise aggressively on the Internet, have gotten into customer accounts online, tricked phone companies into revealing information and even acknowledged that their practices violate laws. ... The law enforcement agencies include offices in the Homeland Security Department and Justice Department -- including the FBI and U.S. Marshal's Service -- and municipal police departments in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia and Utah. Experts believe hundreds of other departments frequently use such services." Today, Congress will hold hearings on the controversial data collection. The House Energy and Commerce investigations subcommittee has already found that law enforcement agencies "often go to such companies for information...to save time and avoid seeking subpoenas or warrants for the information, even though the data brokers do not always obtain their information legitimately." AMERICABlog's John Aravosis, who has covered these privacy issues extensively, predicts the data broker issue is "getting hot."

GLOBAL WARMING -- MAJOR CLIMATE BILL INTRODUCED AS STUDY SHOWS SPIKE IN GLOBAL WARMING POLLUTION: The U.S. Public Interest Research Group released an analysis of government data yesterday showing that 28 states more than doubled their carbon dioxide emissions between 1960 and 2001. One major culprit of the spike in emissions: Increased combustion of oil to fuel our cars and trucks, which accounted for 40% of the total rise. “Oil emissions from the transportation sector soared over the period due to a dramatic rise in vehicle travel and the stagnating fuel efficiency of vehicles, while oil emissions from every other sector peaked in the 1970s." Also yesterday, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) released the Safe Climate Act, the first bill to seriously address global warming and deal specifically with how to slow, stop and reverse the release of greenhouse gases. Under the Act, the level of U.S. emissions would be "frozen in 2010, gradually reduced by 2% each year through 2020, and then reduced by 5% each year through 2050."

The two missing U.S. soldiers found yesterday were beheaded and showed signs of being "brutally tortured before their death." Their remains are being sent to the U.S. for DNA testing, suggesting they "had been wounded or mutilated beyond recognition."

The recently appointed head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection spoke out against a wall being built along the Mexican border. “I don’t support, I don’t believe the administration supports a wall,” Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said yesterday. "It's not practical."

The House will vote this week on an estate tax “compromise” bill from Rep. Bill Thomas (R-CA). “To lure Democratic senators from Washington state and Arkansas, Thomas included a lucrative tax break for the timber industry, pushing the total cost of the bill to nearly $280 billion.”

Not exactly a free press in Afghanistan: “In a coordinated action this week," Afghan intelligence operatives delivered an "unsigned letter" to TV stations and newspapers "ordering journalists to report more favorable news about the government."

After revelations that AT&T set up a secret room in San Francisco that provided the National Security Agency with "full access to its customers' phone calls," Salon now reveals that AT&T has a "more integral" secret room in its Bridgeton, MO facility. "Although they work for AT&T, they're actually doing a job for the government," said a former AT&T employee.

The AP has obtained the FBI files on playwright Arthur Miller, a “longtime liberal who opposed the Vietnam War” and “supported civil rights.” (In 1956, Miller famously refused to name names before Eugene McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee.) One FBI report said Miller's "religious" wedding ceremony was a "cover up" since he was a "cultural front man" for the secular Communist Party.

The conviction of Abramoff-linked former Bush official David Safavian yesterday "could embolden federal prosecutors to seek additional indictments against cronies of Abramoff." Said one analyst, "This is the type of conviction that tends to loosen tongues."

More media consolidation on the horizon?
The FCC today "will embark on a new attempt to revamp media ownership restrictions," with FCC Chairman Kevin Martin joining large media conglomerates in pushing for increased consolidation. (Just in time, The Nation has updated their graph of the National Entertainment State.)

Conservative alumni at colleges such as Dartmouth, Hamilton, and Colgate University, are attempting to take over alumni association boards and are pulling in right-wing bloggers to help them out.

And finally: Doctors are investigating the deadly effects of World Cup fever. “An exciting match can cause fans’ hearts to skip not one beat, but several, leading to a rather worrying incidence of cardiac arrest among soccer die-hards.” In an ongoing study on the phenomenon, German heart attack victims “are asked precisely what they were doing at the time of the attack, whether they were following football on the radio or television, or even watching the pundits after the game.”
