EU defence ministers meet at Innsbruck
Meeting on 6-7 March under Austria's presidency, the EU's 25 defence ministers spent their first day looking at further development of the EU's military capabilities, focusing mainly on civil-military co-operation, disaster relief and the shape and status of the EU's battlegroups.

Iranian resistance group alleges Tehran is developing new medium-range ballistic missile
The Paris-based Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), claimed in London on 6 March claimed that Iran has developed a longer-range version of its Ghadr 101 medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) and has ramped up production of its Shahab 3 MRBM.

Odyssey II promises greatly improved ATM and air defence
Barco (Kortrijk, Belgium) has unveiled a concept for a new, network-centric integrated workstation for air traffic management (ATM) and air defence. Known as Odyssey II, the concept was shown to a select group of ATM officials at the ATC Maastricht 2006 exhibition in the Netherlands from 14 to 16 February.

Australia selects JASSM to fill FOSOW requirement
AUSTRALIA has selected the Lockheed Martin AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Stand-off Missile (JASSM) over the Boeing AGM-84H Stand-off Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response (SLAM-ER) for its AIR5418 follow-on stand-off weapon (FOSOW) requirement, but the acquisition will be reduced to cut costs.

BAE Systems chief calls for study into JSF alternative
BAE Systems Chief Executive Mike Turner has called for the UK to launch a study into the feasibility of using naval variants of the Eurofighter Typhoon as an alternative to the JSF, adding that he believes it is "quite possible". * Issues concerning the UK's access to technology relating to JSF remain unresolved, although Defence Procurement Minister Lord Drayson said he is "optimistic" that there will be a "satisfactory" conclusion by the end of 2006.
