Copenhagen's trial by fire
Copenhagen International Airport has used its Boeing 767 Aircraft Fire Training Simulator on average twice a week since it went into service in December 2002. Martin Howardsen, chief fire officer, explains that the simulator was chosen for its quality and endurance. The airport had considered products from IFTE and Simulation before selecting the latter.

Finnair makes engine choice
Finnair has selected Rolls-Royce Trent 1700 engines for its fleet of Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The airline will take delivery of the first of nine A350 in 2011 and also holds a further four options. New routes are being added to its expanding Asian network with Nagoya (June 2006) and Delhi (November 2006) bringing the total to ten in the region.
Finnair's fleet renewal programme includes the retirement of its remaining MD-82/MD-83 (Finnair and flynordic operated) and ATR 72 (Aero Airlines operated) fleets which are being replaced with Embraer 170 and Embraer 190 aircraft. Three A340 aircraft will also join the fleet with the first being delivered in 2007.

Lufthansa and SWISS coordinate long haul schedules
Both Lufthansa and SWISS will extend their cooperation on flights to and from South America and East Asia. A 'mini-hub' will be created in Sao Paulo through the use of codesharing and schedule coordination with SWISS also adding flights to Santiago, Chile. In Bangkok, Thailand both airlines will coordinate their flight schedules to similarly create a 'mini-hub'.
The changes take effect from 26 March 2006.

Lufthansa appoints new CFO
Lufthansa German Airlines has named Stephan Gemkow to the position of Chief Financial Officer with effect from 1 June 2006. Gemkow's current position of Head of Finance and Human Resources at Lufthansa Cargo AG will be filled by Roland Busch who currently holds the position of Senior Vice President Corporate Finance at Lufthansa German Airlines.

Thomas Cook selects distribution software
Thomas Cook Airlines UK has selected Navitaire's open Skies host reservation software for its online reservation system. The airline, part of Thomas Cook UK & Ireland, has also contracted Navitaire to host the new system as part of the five-year contract which is also designed to reposition the airline by changing its sales strategy by selling its seats directly to passengers through the new online channel.
Thomas Cook Airlines UK operates from UK airports to 52 leisure destinations and carries approximately 2.7 million passengers with a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

United Airlines applies for closer Chinese cooperation
United Airlines will, pending US government approval, begin a codesharing agreement with Shanghai Airlines with effect from 15 May 2006. United Airlines will add its airline code designator (UA) to Shanghai Airlines' flights from Shanghai to Chengdu, Dalian, Qingdao and Shenyang. Shanghai Airlines will add its airline code designator (FM) to United Airlines' flights from Shanghai to Chicago and San Francisco, San Francisco to Los Angeles, Newark and New York (JFK) and Chicago to Newark and New York (La Guardia).
Shanghai Airlines does not currently operate its own flights to the US, although according to the airline's chairman, "Shanghai Airlines was awarded the right to operate flights between China and the US at the end of 2005 as a result of China's liberalisation of the aviation market, specifically on the China to US routes."
